Total Ankle Arthroplasty | Dr. Alex Simpson

Key Highlights

  • Patient-Specific Guides: The surgical team uses a custom 3D replica of the patient's tibia and customized cutting guides to ensure exact bone cut placement and reduce operating time

  • Bone Sizing & Cutting: Sizing blocks are placed on the talus, followed by cutting guides used to slice and remove damaged bone from both the tibia and talus

  • Trial Fitting: Peg holes are prepared in the tibia, and temporary trial components—including the tibial tray, talar piece, and plastic insert—are fitted to verify correct sizing

  • Final Component Insertion: The trial pieces are removed, the site is washed and treated with antibiotic powder, and the permanent implants are placed into the tibia and talus

  • Articulating Joint Completion: A high-grade plastic piece is inserted between the titanium components to allow smooth upward and downward movement of the new ankle joint
