G. Alex Simpson, DO

G. Alex
Simpson, DO Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Fellowship-trained in Foot & Ankle Surgery

As a standout athlete in football, basketball, and track, Dr. G. Alex Simpson tore up Mesa Ridge High School’s competition. He also learned firsthand how intense athletics can tear up muscles, tendons, and bones. In one case, that lesson was literally “first-hand.”

“I had a bad hand injury, and one of my current partners operated on it, ”Dr. Simpson says. That surgeon, Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group hand specialist Dr. Wallace Larson, MD, “fixed my hand and did a great job.”

With his background, it’s no surprise that Dr. Simpson majored in sports medicine and athletic training as a college undergraduate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. From there, his logical next step was a medical degree from Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. He went on to complete an orthopedic surgery residency and then a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery, both in Columbus, Ohio.

Of all the body’s joints, Dr. Simpson says he chose to focus on the foot and ankle because they provide the opportunity to treat “a very diverse multitude of procedures and conditions. I’m not seeing the same thing in all patients. And I get to see patients ranging from children to young adult, athletes to elderly people.”

Five years ago, after finishing his fellowship in Ohio, the Colorado Springs native returned to his hometown. As part of Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, he not only works alongside the surgeon who fixed his hand, he also treats conditions including fractures, sprains, tendon injuries, deformities, and arthritis involving the foot and ankle.

He’s also back on Mesa Ridge playing fields, though not as an athlete this time. “I’m team physician for my old high school, which is really cool. I try to be an inspiration as much as I can. I tell them, ‘I came from this same place, and all of you can do whatever you put your mind to, too.’”
